Never a Dull Moment
These pictures cracked me up... mostly because I can just imagine them all fifteen years from now rockin out at a show! Wonder where they get their dance moves?
All Play and No Work keeps kids misbehaving
With summer comes freedom and lately not enough order around here. Lots of misbehaving and enforced consequences. So, we decided to occupy the kids with some good old fashioned work today. Busy kids are behaving kids. They had fun, stayed out of trouble, and felt good about their clean buggy.

What a crazy and eventful day we had today!! The morning started off great w/ all the kids engaged and playing in the classroom. Some kids worked with the gears or bowled with our bowling set and others got busy playing with the pegs and peg boards. A few kids colored at the writing desks in the kitchen. The super hero capes we made yesterday continued to be a fun addition to their dramatic play today. After breakfast the Dragonflies (Eli, Grace, Finn, and Layla) headed out for a morning neighborhood walk in the buggy. The older kids had a short circle time w/ the felt storyboards and read some of the new library books that Jennifer and the older kids brought back from their field trip yesterday. The Dragonflies returned from our walk and joined the other kids in the yard to play while I (Jena) went downstairs to cook lunch early so we'd be ready for music class.
I decided to bread the zuchini from our garden in flour and then fry it in oil in a pan on the stove. I never fry anything, for starters, but I remembered how yummy the fried zucchini my mom used to make tasted so I decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately when I removed the lid from the hot oil it immediately shot up into flames. After quick thinking and a bit of panic... I used the fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Luckily all of the kids were already outside when the fire started. The smell, smoke, and the fire retardant from the extinguisher were terrible and made a HUGE mess!! It looked like the kitchen had literally been snowed in.
So, while Scott brought in four huge fans to air out the downstairs we headed to the pocket park and then to Zeek's pizza for lunch. The Zeeks staff was awesome and accomidating, setting up their outside tables for our group, along with paper plates, and kid cups of water for all. The kids played in the yard for a bit when we returned so the downstairs could continue to air out. Unfortunately we had to cancel Bonnie, our music teacher, for the day but the kids were all able to get down for a nap only a little later than normal.
While the kids napped, Jennifer, Carrie, Jena, and I were all able to pitch in and clean EVERYTHING in the kitchen; wiping down the floors and ceilings, cleaning all the exposed dishes, pans, silverware, tables, and chairs.
All in all, we are just grateful that everyone was safe and crisis was diverted. It's always good to have a little practice in crisis management, right? :)

Swimming in the tub.
Nola and Ruby spent the morning with the Dragonflies today while the older kids went to a magic show in the International District. We walked to Gatewood to play in the early morning and returned for a swim in the bathtub! They loved getting in their swimsuits and filling the tub up with suds.
Ruby and Nola got tired of being splashed long before Finn and Reid tired of splashing! Here they are watching Sesame Street while I played with Reid and Finn a little longer.

Tuesday July 14th, 2009
Today we headed up to Rite Aid on California in the buggy to run an errand. We had to go purchase a medication lock box for my childcare licensor. We stopped to watch some big construction equipment at work and walked through the outdoor area at the West Seattle Nursery. We checked out some plants, statues, and smelled some pretty flowers. Back at the house we put some music on and danced with colorful scarves. Grace and Layla headed down for morning naps. Finn and Eli both napped on mats downstairs with the big kids. When everyone woke up we played in the upstairs living room with puzzles and shape sorters until snack time. Eli had a great first day and is fitting in with the group well. We're excited to have him as part of our Tiny Tribe family. His parents are Janelle and Brian so if you haven't met them already, please introduce yourselves.
Eli's First Day
On Thursday our new friend, Eli, joined us for a visit in the morning. Finn, Eli, and I took a walk to a nearby construction site while Layla napped, had a snack of bananas and cheese, and played on the equipment at Gatewood School.
