Cherry Jell-O

This morning for class time, the Beetles seemed ecstatic to begin their cooking project. Zoe and Chloe also joined us as the Beetle helpers.

The first step was to pour the gelatin mix into our bowl. Sam raised his hand to show Victoria that he wanted to help with that.

Then, Wiley, Chloe, Katy and Zoe took turns, carefully, stirring in the hot water into the gelatin mix for 2 minutes.

Our second to last step was to add the cold water. Chloe held on to the measuring cup with two hands and carefully poured the water in to our mixture.

Katy wanted to finish stirring the mixture.

During snack time the Beetles will try their cooking project.

This morning the Centipedes took a walk to QFC to pick out an item to bake for our class time. We baked Oatmeal Cookies last week, so we decided to try something else. With the help of the Centipedes, we decided on gluten-free brownies. We looked on the back of the box to find out what else the recipe called for. Only organic salt-free butter and eggs were needed, which made for an easy recipe. We already had butter at the house so they got to pick out the eggs and carry our ingredients over to the register. Back at school the Centipedes shared all the responsibilities of prepping the brownies.

They each took turns pouring a small amount of mix into the bowl, making sure everyone got a turn.

After all the brownie mix was in the bowl, we cracked two eggs and watched what happened when it came in contact with the dry mix.

They noticed that some of the yolk absorbed the dry mix, but Kaya stirred it to mix it in well. After everyone got a turn, it still needed another ingredient to have the mix completed

Ava and Aliza checked the back of the box to see what the next step was. Heat up the butter and pour it into the bowl.

Ava pointed out that the recipe called for only a small stick of butter.

Once the butter was heated and poured into the mix, it was easier to mix and the dry ingredients began to disappear

Raya finishes up the mixing and let us know it was ready to go in the oven

Daily Jobs Around The Classroom

Today during our circle time we had both the Beetles and Centipedes together. On Mondays, the Centipedes get to choose what type of job they would like to help around the classroom. The Beetles were able to choose a job for the first time and they were pretty excited about it. We have name tags for each of the children, and today they put their name next to the job of their choice. Using a job chart and letting them pick their own job, can help with the cleaning process and make it fun for the kids, instead of an annoying task.

Raya wanted to help out the Beetle's today. She held the Beetle's hands while walking outside and even helped them wash their hands and get their shoes on.

Chloe loves setting the table, so she was excited the job was still available.

Wiley chose the "sweeping" job. After snack he's going to help the teachers sweep and dump the dust into the garbage.

Lena has been wanting to be in charge of turning on and off the lights when he leave and enter a room. She made sure to never forget to turn off the lights.

Sam chose the "empty trash" job, and he too will help one of the teachers at the end of the day carry the recycle out.

In between class and circle time, Myla helped keep the classroom clean by washing the windows and door.

Katy helped her friends put their sheets onto their mat before story time

Zoe had the "serving dishes" job, but wanted to help Chloe out by setting the table too.

Space Adventures with Bonnie!

Today Bonnie was greeted with lots of squeals and cheers when she came to Tiny Tribe with her arms loaded up with fun space music and the entire solar system. Check out the videos of our fun below:

Art Attack: Getting Inspired

Before beginning our morning class time we went to pocket park to get a little inspiration. On our walk we talked about going back to school and painting our favorite things. Beetles were happy to point out everything they saw around them. They all pointed out birds, trees, houses, dogs.
Katy and Wiley chose to paint on the easels. Sam and grant preferred to use water colors for their creations.

Grant: 'Doggie'.

To continue our theme for this week, we had the Beetles and Centipedes make their own creations with play-dough. Some chose to create castles, while other's made anything from pizza to birthday cakes. We finished our class time by singing Happy Birthday to our friends. Homemade Popcicles!

At Tiny Tribe we have quite a few kids who avoid certain foods due to allergies, intolerances, or just personal preferences. We are always looking for new ways to make well-loved kid food, like popsicles, better for everyone.

We were excited to find a new product called Zipzicle at Bartells on our morning walk yesterday. By following an easy and healthy recipe on the back of the package we were able to make our own popsicles together. We combined coconut ice cream (dairy free), grape juice, strawberries and bananas in our vitamix and blended. The kids then each helped pour the mixture through a funnel and into their popsicle bag.
