This month our calendar pattern is AAAB (yellow, yellow, yellow, red). Patterning is a basic math skill upon
which many other mathematical concepts are based. Future math concepts, like addition, skip
counting, and time tables all require an understanding of patterning. In
preschool, identifying and creating patterns is just the beginning of the
mastery of life-long mathematical skills.
Poetry paints verbal pictures for children and helps them develop auditory discrimination. Shel Silverstein is one of our classroom's current favorite poets. They love hearing the funny poems read aloud and often erupt into uncontrollable giggling. Besides being hilarious, the rhythms of his poetry introduce children to the patterns and rhymes of language.
