As adults, we have seen and experienced a lot in our many years of life. For one year-olds, everything is new. They don't need complicated or fancy things to entertain them.
A simple set of connecting blocks can be explored in many different ways. For Eva, putting them together was challenging but she was determined to figure it out. Her vocabulary is expanding every day and we counted them together and talked about their colors.
Kaya was more interested in taking them apart. Eva strung them together and then handed them to Kaya to take them apart. She is learning that she can accomplish things. She can change things in her world.
Anna Lee wanted to take them out of the bin and put them back in. Out and in. Out and in.
What may appear to be simple play to adults, is actually multiple brain connections being created every minute. Did you know that at birth children have 50 trillion connections (synapses) and in just the first months of life the number of those synapses increases to 1,000 trillion? Early experiences create new synapses and repetition of experiences strengthen them. Growth continues and a single neuron can connect with as many as 15,000 other neurons.
