Real Life Learning In Seriation and Sorting

What is seriation and why is it important? Seriation is a math concept that involves comparing or putting objects or steps into a sequence (from first to last for instance). It is important because it is a prerequisite for patterning. While we have lots of games and activities in our classroom that reinforce learning about seriation, one of the best ways that children learn is through experiential learning and doing. Everyday processes, like setting the table, have an order to them. Chase understands that the first step to helping in the kitchen is to wash his hands.

Chase gives each chair a plate. He's sorting out objects in pairs, one plate to one chair.

He continues sorting out the cups and spoons too. He's learning that the job of setting the table has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
