Today the Centipedes explored how to figure out distances. They used
their hands and feet to help figure out how far/long things were. We
talked about how we can use these units of measurement to make a map.
Counting their steps and then making hash marks on their paper for each
one (that was the idea.. they did their own version but the foundation
was there :)
With a clipboard and pencil in hand we headed out for a walk. Counting how many steps it took all of us to get from one spot to the next.
Later this week, we can take our data and help make directions for our friends to follow to see if they can find the spots we went to and help put a map together.
At the pocket park, we explored how time is sometimes used when calculating distance. They each took a turn and ran around the circle and we timed how long it took each of them.
They would stop and "write" down their information on their clipboards between turns.
As they recorded their time they felt they needed a few signs to help the process. They had a great time taking turns letting each other know when to stop and go.
They also wanted to help the flow of pedestrian and car traffic calling out and showing their "stop" sign for those passing by.
